Joe DiPaolo, president of Newton Medical Center, said that he couldn’t be more proud of the maternity team at Newton Medical Center, adding, “Having a regional maternity center to address the needs of patients from Sussex, Warren and Pike counties reflects our commitment to the highest quality care for mothers and babies.” To become designated as Baby-Friendly, a hospital, whether it be large or small, not-for-profit or for-profit, must successfully complete four phases of the 4-D pathway program. After the hospital registers through Baby-Friendly USA, it makes a commitment to the process and receives a set of tools to assist in implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding were developed by a team of global experts and endorsed by maternal and child health authorities including the American academies of family physicians, nurses and pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. surgeon general. The 10 steps include: have a written breastfeeding policy, train all health care staff in the skills necessary to implement the policy, inform women of the benefits and management of breastfeedings, help mothers initiate breastfeeding within an hour of giving birth, and showing mothers how to breastfeed and maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their infants. Data is collected and results are measured against the Baby-Friendly USA Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria where audit results indicate that all required standards have been met. The final phase of the program has the facility complete an implementation of the guidelines and discusses their status with Baby-Friendly USA during a telephone interview. Baby-Friendly USA then sends a survey team to the facility to conduct an on-site assessment, including interviews, observations and document reviews and then the external review board of Baby-Friendly USA confers the designation after all steps have been properly implemented. There are over 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals worldwide, with 401 in the U.S. in 49 states and the District of Columbia. To maintain the designation, the hospital must continue to practice the Ten Steps through demonstrations of quality processes.
