According to Obstetrician/Gynecologist Kristi Johnson, M.D., Chair of SRMCs Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the use of this technology can immediately link Akron Childrens expertise in neonatology with the SRMC team caring for the newborn. Our maternity staff has participated in an in-depth orientation regarding the telemedicine services that will be provided by Akron Childrens Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) through the tele-newborn program. When neonatal support is needed, we can immediately call upon neonatologists at Akron Childrens, who will consult with our medical team through the use of interactive video or remote patient monitoring. The neonatologist can evaluate a newborn at SRMC via secure, real-time telecommunications to help diagnose the babys condition and determine the necessary plan of care. This service is available at SRMC round-the-clock, whenever a neonatologist is needed immediately.
